A native of Oban and son of Oban Times editor Stewart Mackenzie John came to the area as a trainee gamekeeper and found the native species to his liking. A former Oban Camanachd player he has represented Scotland at under 21 level. A very physical player who hits the ball well John plays with unrivalled passion which in the past sometimes led to unnecessary disciplinary problems. Lives in Newtonmore with his wife Gayle daughter of 'Brick' Macarthur the team manager. Became a father in 2012 the year he is club captain
