1] On the Field The end of the season seems to be dragging
on a bit with the weather now playing havoc with the fixtures.
As I write the last two home games are the 2nds on Sat 1st Nov
v Lovat and the 1sts on Sat 8th Nov v Inverary. Victory in the
latter game would mean the 1sts ended in second position.
2] Laggan Heritage talk About 40 people attended the talk
by Rob Ritchie in Laggan Village Hall on Thursday 24th October
on the history of shinty in the Highland s and the local Laggan
connection. Rob gave a hugely entertaining and informative demonstration
of his encyclopaedic knowledge of people, facts and anecdotes
both about shinty and other aspects of Highland history and culture.
Scanned photographs onto a screen by John Russell gave added interest
as people with connections to the local area were identified and
indeed some people in the audience were related to or had met
some of the historic characters. A collection of interesting artefacts
were also on display and the way people lingered to look at these
and chat to Rob bore testament to how his enthusiasm for shinty
and its characters had rubbed off on even the non shinty people
in the audience.
3] Coaching project We are still looking for coaches,
but a number of leads with Inverness College, PE teachers and
others are being followed up. This is delaying the start of the
after school clubs.
One really good bit of news since last month is that the Cairngorms
National Park Authority/LEADER have increased their contribution
to £18000. This means that we are only about £1500
short of having all the funding in place though there are some
points of detail to sort out with CNPA about the grant conditions.
[For instance the cost of helmets and camans will be about £3000
more than the original budget and we want to be sure that we can
reduce expenditure on other items and spend it to make up the
difference.]
A really positive problem has emerged at Gergask because an amazing
18 of the 20 pupils are wanting to take part in the after school
sessions so there is a shortage of helmets and camans. Many thanks
to Peter Ross for taking the after school club.
4] New Sign The new sign was delivered last week and very
smart it looks too. Unfortunately the manufacturers failed in
their attempt to position it on a windy morning so we took it
into safe custody in the tractor shed.
5] Dinner dance This is at the Balavil Hotel on Saturday
6th December. Tickets are available from Brick priced £20.

or 07903 050385
6] Annual sale This is our biggest annual fundraising
event and it is also on Sat 6th December at 2pm. We hope to be
doing lunches and coffees too. As always we are looking to you
for generous donations of cash [!], raffle prizes, bottles for
the stall and home baking. We will also accept quality bric a
brac and books. We will have our customary sale of venison and
Anisa Caine has been making large quantities of chutney to sell
at her special chutney stall.
Apart from donations in kind I would welcome offers of volunteers
to help with both the stalls and with the lunches.
7] Surplus helmets/camans Still needing donations of these
for the schools project. New helmets now cost over £40 and
camans for youths can be as much as £30.
8] University fixture The north v south ladies and men's
University games are scheduled for Saturday 29th November at 1130
and 1330 respectively at the Eilan. If two volunteers were available
to help with teas for a couple of hours each that would be great.
9] Annual General Meeting This will be on either Friday
9th January or Friday 16th January at 7.30pm and we will confirm
the date by the end of November.
10] Bus shelters We have abandoned the attempt to convert
these into dugouts. The cost of the replacement Perspex is steep
and the structures have proved to be child magnets. Whilst a home
dugout would be good we feel that a better quality and potentially
cheaper solution could be achieved.
