Newtonmore Camanachd Club

Newsletter 12 December 2008

1] Sale and lunches Sat 6th December Although the attendance was not as high as last year [possibly due to the wintry conditions] the generosity of donors and those attending ensured that we took in over £2000 with a profit to the club in excess of £1500. Many thanks to the Village Hall Committee for doing the lunch with us and to all those who contributed soups and puddings as well as making other donations in kind or of time.

2] Dinner dance Around 100 people enjoyed an excellent meal, some alcoholic beverages and even a bit of dancing to the accompaniment of David Holt at the Balavil Hotel on the evening of the sale. Player awards were revived with Danny Macrae winning player of the year; Calum Binnie was most improved player; and Rory Kennedy was young player of the year. Many thanks to Wolftrax for their sponsorship of the main raffle prize.

3] Annual General Meeting This will be on Friday 16th January at 7.30pm in the clubhouse and we hope for a large turn out. The agenda and papers have been e-mailed to everyone on our e-mail list. The Accounts will be available prior to the meeting.

4] Behaviour in Sport Committee You will have seen in the Strathy that Newtonmore have been warned as a club as to our future behaviour and given a suspended sentence. [Our response to the Association was summarised last month and reported accurately in the Strathy, but if anyone would like to see a copy please let me know.] The club will be giving all players and spectators a copy of their respective codes of conduct and we trust that everyone will abide by them in 2009.

5] Newtonmore 10 mile Road race You may be interested to know that this is being revived, but a date for it is still to be confirmed.

6] Coaching certificate There is a new level 1 Certificate in Coaching Shinty which meets the standards of the UKCC. It is provided for :
A] New coaches who have completed the previous Foundation course.
B] Coaches who completed the previous level 1 course before 2008.
C] Unqualified players/coaches who can demonstrate appropriate experience.

There will be an induction evening on Thurs 29th January 7pm to 9.30pm [venues to be decided] and a 2 day course on Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th February in Fort William.

The cost is £75, but the club is keen to encourage more people to acquire and use coaching qualifications so if you possess the necessary motivation we will meet the costs of the course. Contact Graham Cormack 01463 715931 or 07894 588538 for further information. Applications need to be returned by Thursday 22nd January.

7] Foundation refereeing certificate This course is being run in the evenings from 6-10pm in the Inverness area on Monday 12th January and in the Fort William area on Wednesday 11th February. Costs will again be covered by the club for anyone who is committed to using the qualification. Contact Graham Cormack on the numbers above or graham.cormack@shinty.com to reserve a place and get details on the venues.

8] Sponsorship 2009 We are very pleased that ROK have agreed to continue their sponsorship of the 1st team for a further year especially in the current economic crisis. Thanks also to BLASTA for continued sponsorship of the fixture leaflet. Match ball sponsorship is available at £15 and 1st team raffle prizes at £10: the majority of the games are available so let me know if you want a copy of the current lists of available opposition.

The advertising boards are still available for 3 years at £350 [or three annual payments of £150, £105 & £105]. If you know of a business who might be interested and you have a contact in the business it would be great if you could ask for their support on our behalf. We also have a number of other sponsorship opportunities including whisky for the lottery for a year at £520, beverages for the season at £100 and paint for the concrete posts at £50! Again contact me if you want the complete list.

9] 2009 Fixtures The draft list of fixtures for the season has already been circulated. It would be appreciated if you could let me know of any anomalies so that I can advise the Association. The Open Day will be on Saturday 28th Feb.
