1] Results What a way for the 1sts to
finish Junes matches with a comprehensive 4-0 drubbing of Kingussie in
the MacAulay Cup. Although some of the previous wins against Bute and
Glenorchy were a bit of a struggle Kingussie were totally outplayed as
the team found form both individually and collectively. This augurs well
for the rest of the season. The 2nds had some mixed results during the
month and were unlucky not to at least get extra time in a very exciting
4-5 loss to Glenorchy in the Sutherland Cup.
2] Williamson Cup etc Another really
enjoyable evening as over 100 youngsters and 17 teams from Kinlochlaggan
to Tomatin took part in the shinty 6s tournament. About 20% of the
participants were girls and the new trophy for girls was won by
Newtonmore captained by Ailee Robinson although a number of girls also
played in the other teams. It was an all Kingussie final in the
MacDonald shield for ages 5-8, but an all Newtonmore final for the
Gergask Quaich for Primary 4&5 children with the B side winning strike
from Jordan Beaton and the side captained by Stuart Leslie.
The main event was the Williamson Cup with
Newtonmore A taking on Kingussie A after a victory against them in the
group section. A late equaliser from Ryan Spinks after a mazy run by
Liam Mullender took the game to extra time. Kingussie scored what proved
to be the winner despite a Neil Stewart strike squirming through the
Kingussie keepers legs only to stop on the goal line. Neil was voted
player of the tournament.
Many thanks to Rob Ritchie for his generous support
of this event.
3] Could you spare an hour? Shinty Family
Sunday takes place again on 3rd August at the Eilan. This
year the leaflets and posters have been sponsored by Ian Grover and we
want to ensure that every household in Dalwhinnie, Laggan and Newtonmore,
and parts in between, get their own leaflet. Please let Ian Gibson know
if you could help…the last two weeks of July is when we will want them
delivered.
4] Highland Games weekend The Family Sunday
event this year will not have music, but it will have a BBQ, a licensed
bar and lots of prizes for a variety of shinty competitions that
everyone can try. There is no entry charge this year. As happened
last year I am hoping that the prizes will be donated by local
businesses. The under 14 Cup has already been sponsored by EIS so many
thanks to Tony and Mandy.
Don’t forget Friday 1st when there is
going to be a sponsored marathon along the Newtonmore main street and a
ceilidh dance in the village hall.
5] Old helmets and camans Have you any in
the house that you can donate to the club so that we can supply spares
to the local schools? The first two helmets have been donated by Peter
Duncan, but we know there are dozens more unused ones out there. New
ones cost £38 so you can see why we are on the scrounge!
6] Coaching project Since last months
newsletter we have been awarded a grant of £11500 by the Cairngorms
National Park Authority which is about 30% of the total cost. This means
that we have been able to get ahead and order helmets and sticks for all
the Primary and Secondary schools in Badenoch and Strathspey.
We are now looking for players and ex players to
come forward and make themselves available as coaches for after school
clubs so that we can make the project a success. From the beginning of
next term all schools in Badenoch and Strathspey will be required to
have shinty as one of the core sports on the school curriculum. Why this
has not been the case for years is beyond me, but the committee is very
happy that Council policy has changed to make it compulsory.
7] Ground improvements In the last month Rob
has finished the behind the goal nets and the excellent new shed is
providing shelter for the tractor and other equipment. The plan now is
to get shelving and store cupboards into the store at the far end of the
pavilion, get it properly organised and clear stuff out of the first aid
room so that it can be used as such without tripping over boxes.
The long-awaited rain has stimulated some grass
growth on the new training pitch, but there are still bare patches. On
Friday 4th July we are going to get over seeding done on the
bare patches both on the training area and on the pitch. We also intend
getting the taps at either end of the pitch in full working order and
acquire new lengths of hose pipe so that the old sprinkler apparatus
currently gathering dust in a corner of the store can be used again
which should prevent the situation arising again in the future.
8] Spare trees still wanted The [relative]
drought has helped caused a number of the young trees to die despite
regular watering. Our planning permission for the shed specifically
states that any tree that dies in the first 5 years has to be replaced
and at the moment approximately 10 of the 150 are deceased. We can only
plant native species so once again a request for any surplus Scots
pines, rowan, wild cherry, oak, birch, alder or beech saplings.
9] Fixture changes There have been some
fixture changes as a result of cup results and postponements so keep an
eye out for the posters advertising the home games. If anyone would like
a copy of the current fixture list till the end of the season please let
me know. At the moment there are home fixtures scheduled for every
Saturday in July.
