Camanachd Club
Newsletter 7 2008
1] Results July has been a good month with
the 2nds reaching the semi-final of the Strathdearn Cup and of course
the 1sts beating Fort William 5-3 in the Macaulay Cup semi-final. We
also have the semi-final of the Camanachd Cup at Kingussie on 9th
August to look forward to after the victory over Glenurquhart.
For the trip to Oban on 23rd August we are
intending to put on a supporters bus. Spaces can be reserved by sending
me an e-mail. We last won the Macaulay Cup in 1986 when Brick was in the
team and we last met Inverary in a National final in 1967 when David
Cheyne was on the winning side!
2] Highland Games weekend The shinty club
marathon [Friday from 5pm] has received good sponsorship support and
there is still time to guess the total time and Bricks time for a mile.
We have received some good prizes for the raffle including a meal at
International Starters and an electric guitar worth over £150. The
raffle will be drawn at the ceiliodh/dance later in the evening. I hope
you will come and enjoy the sight, the BBQ and the bar and encourage
tourists to give us money!
We now also have good prizes for the family Sunday
event. [Thanks to EIS, the Glen Hotel, Eagle View, the Highlander Hotel,
Newtonmore Grill and a number of individuals]. The keepy uppy
competition has been replaced with a dribbling skills competition which
will be more interesting for spectators. There is a new under 8
competition this year as well as a prize for the best performance by a
visitor….so if you have visitors at the weekend do encourage them to
come along. Thanks to everyone who helped with the house to house
leaflet delivery.
I do still need more volunteers to help ensure the
Eilan is tidied up and to help run the competitions….please let me know
if you can help. Ladies and children will be charged £1 for an entry and
men will be charged £1 for each competition.
3] Meet the Camanachd Association As part of
a series of road shows the President, Duncan Cameron, and other board
members will be attending a consultation meeting at the Silverfijord
Hotel at 7.30 pm on Thursday 21st August. Anyone connected
with the club is encouraged to come along and listen/ make suggestions
for improvements in the running of the games.
4] Old helmets and camans We are still on
the scrounge for any old helmets and camans that may be lying around
your house. We need them to supply spare helmets and sticks to local
schools….new helmets are £38 and junior sticks can be as much as £30.
5] Coaching project I am pleased to report
that Paul Macarthur and Scott Campbell have agreed to take the after
school club at Kingussie High school with Fraser Mackintosh as back up.
Ian Ross of Kingussie has offered to help with Aviemore and Alvie and at
Alvie will be helped by Jaccqui Douglas. Jane Nicol has been appointed
as the part-time PE teacher for the Grantown school cluster and is going
to be taking the after school club at Grantown Primary. A start date
will depend whether our stick order arrives in time! Arrangements at
Laggan, Kingussie and Newtonmore Primaries continue unchanged.
Many thanks to ‘Rocky’ of Laggan for his generous
donation to help youth shinty.
6] Ground improvements The over seeding and
more regular watering have allowed the grass to get established on the
training area and some recovery of the grass on the main pitch. We can
now reach about 80% of the pitch with the hoses! We have stopped any
heavy vehicles using the training area during the Highland Games to
protect it.
7] Under 17 league The WJ Cameron league is
scheduled to start with a match at the Dell against Kingussie on Monday
11th August with a home game against Caberfeidh slotted for
18th August. In the past these games have been subject to
change so we will try and let people know by e-mail.
8] Newtonmore scarves Some of you may well
still have scarves from days when we were more regular attenders at
finals. For those that do not I am expecting to have a sample blue and
white scarf available for Friday so that people who want to have one for
the MacAulay Cup final can see it and get their order in over the
weekend. They will cost £8 each.
9] Spare trees still wanted As if drought
wasn’t bad enough some of the trees have now been damaged by
unsupervised young children armed with shinty sticks. Surplus Scots
pine, rowan, wild cherry, oak, birch, beech and alder saplings would be
gratefully received.
10] Crowd restrictions After considering the
encroachment of the crowd during the tense match against Fort William,
and the potential safety risk to young children in particular, the
committee have instituted a new ruling that everyone must be behind the
safety barrier with the exception of the club coach and trainer. This
worked without any problems against Lochaber. Your cooperation in
ensuring this is adhered to would be very much appreciated.
11] Marine Harvest Not much publicity for
it, but it is taking place on Saturday 2nd at Spean Bridge. Glen
Mackintosh is in the North senior squad and Owen Fraser in the North
under 21 squad so congratulations to them.
