Newtonmore Camanachd Club

Newsletter 9 2008

1] Results It's been a very disappointing month on the field with a series of poor results for the 1sts and inconsistent results for the 2nds. The best performances were undoubtedly the 4-3 victory over Kingussie by the Primary school team in the Mackintosh Cup and the under 17 victory over Kingussie 2-0.

Four of our under 16 players were part of the Kingussie High School team that won the Great Glen shinty 6s competition, the first time the school has won it since it started in 1995.

We also had a couple of Newtonmore players in the B&S Ladies team that beat Strathglass 11-0 in the Cup final! The ladies team have gone through their first season undefeated so far.

2] Coaching project Many thanks to Rob Ritchie for helping Tony Mullender and I put grips on the clubs which have now started arriving from the various suppliers. Aviemore Primary will be able to start playing shinty after the mid term break. The Grantown cluster has already started playing 1st shinty under Jane Nicol and will start playing the real thing shortly.

I am still looking for coaches: you do not need any coaching qualification to start with as I will be able to pair you up with a teacher or qualified coach and help you gain access to a coaching qualification with the help of the Area Shinty Coaching Committee.

We are delighted to report that the Aviemore and Cairngorms Destination Marketing Organisation are supporting our initiative to the tune of £7500 over the next three years. Amongst the items they have agreed to purchase is portable goals. This brings the total raised for this project to over £30000.

3] Generous donation A number of years ago Jean Noble produced a black and white picture of what a historic shinty match might have looked like and this resulted in a limited edition print. On the occasion of her recent art exhibition in Kingussie Jean kindly offered to sell the prints for £7 with all the proceeds going to the B&S Youth Shinty Coaching Project. We have just received a cheque for £56 from Jean. She has also said that she is happy to continue selling the remaining prints in aid of this project and hopes to send us an image to put on the website too.

If you are interested in buying a print [which would be an excellent alternative to sending a calendar to a relative abroad!] please let me know. We are very grateful to Jean for this generous gesture, particularly as she has little interest in shinty!

4] Newtonmore Slug Traps
Difficult to understand I know, but the club is the owner of bottled beer that is past its sell by date! Old beer is an excellent, environmentally friendly way of killing slugs …they cannot resist the aroma and drown in a drunken stupor. Slug numbers are at record levels this year so why not help reduce the number. You can get this beer in exchange for a small donation to the shinty club.

5] Dinner dance and annual sale This is advanced notice for your diary. The two events will both take place on Saturday 6th December. The sale will, as usual, be in the Newtonmore Village Hall at 2pm and nearer the time we will be asking for your usual generosity in donations of home-baking, books, bottles, venison etc.

The dinner dance this year will be in the Balavil Hotel which will allow us to increase the numbers attending.

6] Miscellaneous games at the Eilan One of the leagues of the Wade Cup, a schools event involving 4 teams playing 3 games each will take place on Tuesday 7th October.

Saturday 29th November sees two matches as Newtonmore hosts the mens and ladies universities north v south competitions. Posters advertising this event will be displayed nearer the time. The teams involve some Newtonmore players.

7] Old/used sticks and helmets I'm still looking for donations!!!
