Newtonmore Camanachd Club

October 2009

] On the Field A really frustrating time for the 1st team with no games all month. A couple of great results from the 2nds winning 3-2 at Glenurquhart and then 8-0 at Kinlochshiel. The 2nds ought to be capable of mounting a serious challenge for the league next season.

] Remaining fixtures It's difficult to see past the match against Kingussie on 7th November, but we have Lochaber away on 14th November and Inverary possibly on 21st November. Depending on the Kingussie result both of these could still be crucial to winning the league. The 2nds game re Skye has also still to be rearranged.

] Tots kit sponsorship Many thanks to James Brannan who got half of the cost of this supported by HIS and then made up the remainder jointly with Alan Orr. Not content with that he is now going to be selling the chance to get your firms name on the jerseys for £10 a go with the proceeds going to the club.

] Pitch improvements Many thanks also to Richard Ralph who has been doing major repairs for several weeks not just to the goal areas but also at the centre spot and other damaged parts of the pitch. It was a much bigger job than it seemed originally. We have clearly marking off the areas that have been repaired to avoid damage to them so if you see anyone trying to use these areas please stop them!

] Clubhouse improvements Thanks also to the Cheynes and particularly to Rob Ritchie for the creation of the wheelchair accessible path to the rear of the clubhouse. Funding support for this and the railings/gate was provided by the Scottish Community Foundation.

] Sale and lunches This will be on Saturday 5th December at 2pm in the village hall as usual. Donations of cash are of course welcome, but this is also a chance to get some income from the club from your donations of home baking, bottles, plants, books etc. Soup and pudding lunches are again going to be provided in partnership with the village hall committee from noon. Donations of soups and puddings would be most welcome + we are looking for 4 volunteers from the club to help with the set up and service. Can you help?

] Annual dance Tickets for the Annual dinner dance to be held on Saturday 5th December 7 for 730pm at the Highlander Hotel are available from Eddy Harrigan. Music is the party night combination of Kenny Nairn and Ian Grover. Tickets are £20 for members and £22.50 for non-members. Please contact Eddy at eddy.harrigan@hotmail.com Tel 01540 670159 or 07933 210725 to reserve your tickets.

] Advertising Boards This is a really important source of income for us and it gives those that advertise great exposure. [The ad boards have featured regularly in the Oban Times Spot the Ball competition!] If you know of someone who has a business and might be interested why not ask them on our behalf. The cost is only £350 for 3 years [including the provision of the board] or three payments of £150, £105 & £105.

] B & S Youth shinty initiative It's a while since I've given an update. Shinty is again on the curriculum of all the schools in Badenoch and Strathspey this year. The number of additional after school clubs grew to ten in September, but we are hopeful that members of the Kincraig club will take over running sessions at Alvie now that we have about 25 children taking part there. The monthly Sunday events that the Area Coaching Committee have organised have not been such a great success as there appear to have been a few communication problems. We are going to be running some regular Sunday sessions at the Badenoch centre for the tots in Laggan and Newtonmore.

] Unexpected donation Balfour Beattie had donated money to Laggan Heritage to fund the extension to the memorial site to Cpl James Hendry at Kinlochlaggan with any surplus funds to be used at their discretion. Laggan Youth Club and Gergask shinty received donations and the final balance of £500 has been donated to our club to help with the costs of equipment, training and travel costs for the younger players. We are very grateful to the Laggan Heritage committee for this generous gesture.
