Newtonmore Camanachd Club
December 2009
1] 1st team sponsorship We are delighted to announce that Aberdein Considine will be our 1st team sponsor for the next three years. Over the years they have been fantastic supporters both of the club in particular and shinty in general: one of the first businesses to take an advertising board, sponsor of the Family Sunday event and generous donor to the Badenoch and Strathspey Youth Coaching Initiative as well as the national sponsor of the Sutherland Cup. Perhaps with their name on the shirt we will go one better in the league having only missed out on goal difference.

2] Sale and lunches Many thanks to everyone who helped with, donated cash or produce and bought items on the day. The lunches made £325, Anisa Caine’s packed meals/raffle £300 and we made a profit of just over £2000 in total.
3] Annual dance Congratulations to Paul Macarthur, David Wilde and Michael Russell for picking up the 1st team, 2nd team and youth player awards at the dance. The club are very grateful to James Brannan for his enterprising sale of the sponsorship name on the tots jerseys which was won by International Starters. Many thanks to the Highlander Hotel staff who provided us with an excellent meal and service.
4] AGM This will be on Friday 15th January at 8pm in the clubhouse. If anyone has a motion for the AGM it would require to be with me by 1st January signed by twelve members. The Committee will have one proposed amendment to the Constitution which currently has no provision for junior membership. This provision is needed in relation to our membership of the Camanachd Association and the insurance policy for youth players. The following addition to paragraph 12 will be proposed:
‘’ Any person below the age of 18 playing for or training with any of the club teams is automatically enrolled as a junior member of the club. The club makes no membership charge to junior members and pays for their membership of the Camanachd Association’’
Posters advertising the AGM will be displayed in Newtonmore, Laggan and Dalwhinnie and there has been a notice placed in the Strathy.
5] Some 2010 dates
AGM Friday 15th January at 8pm.
Family Race night Saturday 20th February from 4pm. * Please note change of date
Saturday 27th February Open day and challenge match.
Saturday 20th March Newtonmore 10mile race evening Ceilidh.
6] 10 mile race 20th March The evening Ceilidh which we are doing in partnership with the village hall committee is mentioned above. However more support is needed: the race starts at 11am and both marshals + sandwiches are needed. Any organisation supporting this event gets a donation to their funds. We have been told by the Camanachd Association that we will be allocated a 1st team home game that day so that we can get as many of the 200 runners and supporters along to the game as possible.
6] Tots events We had excellent turn outs [over 30] on Wednesday 9th and Sunday 13th December at the Badenoch centre. The latter event also included a session for older kids as part of the Youth Coaching initiative where teams from Carrbridge and Abernethy more than held their own against Newtonmore. There were more than 60 children at the two events on Sunday. Many thanks to all the volunteers who helped.
7] Oral History project + lost memorabilia At last years AGM it was reported that we would try get a project off the ground about the history of shinty/the club without cost to the club. The first stage in this process will be a meeting with the Archives, Museum and National Park Authority just before this year’s AGM.
With excellent timing we discovered that the late Jack Richmond’s papers which were amongst papers deposited in the archives by Hugh Dan MacLennan had been catalogued. A brief sampling of some of the papers has unearthed the Mhairi Hedderwick drawings that the club commissioned for a book, an original photograph of the 1907 Camanachd Cup winning team belonging to the club and historical newspaper archives that Rob Ritchie has been looking for!
We are now discussing with the archives how we identify the items that belong to us not least because some of them would be of great interest at the open day at the end of February.
8] Camanachd Association seeks Directors If anyone is interested for more information, please contact Bruce Crawford on 01463 715931 email bruce.crawford@shinty.com
