Newtonmore Camanachd Club
Newsletter January 2009
1] Annual General Meeting There was a good turn out and
it was a very positive meeting. The minutes have been sent out
separately. Willie Menzies is going to be assisting Brick with
the 1st team and Cammy Macdonald is taking over the position for
the 2nd team. Cammy was also elected vice-chieftain. Tony Mullender
was co-opted onto the committee after the AGM. The committee would
be particularly pleased if a player would be willing to join the
committee.
2] Open day and 'friendlies' The Open day on 28th Feb
will feature a primary school match between Newtonmore and Laggan
and the 1sts will take on Beauly. 14th Feb sees the 1sts take
on Kinlochshiel and 21st Feb has Inverness visiting to play the
2nds. A house to house leaflet drop advertising the Open Day will
be organised so I will be looking for volunteers. We hope to be
able to do the house to house delivery of the fixture leaflet
at the same time.
3] Get fit with weights and indoor football Why not try
out some new ways of keeping fit at very modest cost? Paul Mellis
has weight training slots available on Monday and Tuesday nights
£3 per 1 hour session. The sessions were initially aimed
at players but have been "lightened" for non players.
It is free weights work with some core strength work. If anybody
is interested they need to e-mail procoachscotland@aol.com or
phone/text Paul on 07827 925678.
Indoor football organized by Eddie Harrigan is being played from
6pm to 7.30pm on Thursdays in the Badenoch centre at a cost of
£2/night. No great degree of skill is needed, age is no
barrier and everyone gets ample playing time.
4] Season tickets Forms area available through the website
or by contacting the secretary [as are life membership forms which
reduce the price of the season ticket]. All season ticket holders
will receive a copy of a code of conduct that has been approved
by the committee. Similar codes of conduct will be given to players
and coaches as part of the conditions applied to the club by the
behaviour in sport committee of the Association.
5] Player membership All players must pay their membership
fee before being eligible to represent the club. [Again life membership
reduces the cost]. A code of conduct will be issued with each
membership card.
6] 10 mile run 21st March Geof Simpson through the Business
Association has arranged this event starting from near the village
hall at noon. Unfortunately that is the date of the 1sts home
game against Kingussie, but volunteers are needed to help marshal
the route. The Shinty Club and the Village Hall committee are
jointly running a Ceilidh and bar in the Village Hall so we are
looking for a few bar volunteers.
7] Sponsorship We are having great help from James Brennan
who has secured several new advertising board sponsors for us.
If you have a contact you could make or supply to us that would
be great. The cost is £350 for 3 years including the cost
of the board and a 3 year payment option is available. Other sponsorship
opportunities include: Williamson 6s £150 Beverages for
the season £100
Paint for concrete posts round Eilan £50 Match ball £15
1st team raffle £10 [or gift in kind] + prizes for raffles
throughout the season.
8] Player insurance The insurance through the Camanachd
Association for payment for absence from work over two weeks as
a result of a sporting injury now covers other field sports as
well as shinty, but excluding rugby.
9] Lotto There has been a disappointing uptake for standing
orders for the lottery. Wouldn't it be a shame if your regular
numbers came up, but you had not bought a ticket! Make it easy
for yourself and fill out a standing order for £4.33/month
for each 3 number line. I have attached a copy of the standing
order form. It's a painless way of supporting the club.
10] Youth Shinty Initiative Many thanks to Rocky for donating
money from sales of 'Natural Mechanical' to the club. We have
received a further donation of £1400 from the Council Area
Discretionary Fund which will now enable us to draw down the full
£18000 from the National Park as they required matched public
funding. You will recall that the club is supporting this to the
tune of £7500 over 3 years so all donations to offset this
cost are welcome.
11] Found One pair of good quality gents brown leather
tough walking shoes in a cupboard in the clubhouse. If no one
claims them soon I would like them!
