Newtonmore Camanachd Club

Newsletter February 2009

1] Gergask triumph Gergask Primary won't be one of the teams putting on an exhibition game at the Open Day on 28th February for all the right reasons. Their 'A' team won all 5 games in a recent qualifier for the Primary 7 sixes competition beating four teams from Kingussie and Newtonmore as well as their 'B' team without conceding a goal. The finals are unfortunately in Fort William on the same day as the Open Day which means a few Laggan supporters will be away.

2] Open Day Many thanks to John Hewer for donating a nights B&B for two at Eagle View Guest House and to Anne Connolly for donating a voucher for an osteopathy treatment as raffle prizes. A second volunteer to sell raffle tickets on the day with Anne would be appreciated.

Thanks to everyone who helped to distribute the advertising leaflet and fixture list to all houses from Newtonmore to Dalwhinnie to Ardverikie and all parts in between.

We intend to have all the advertising boards as well as the new sign on display.

3] Advertising boards We are delighted that Alan Orr, Howdens, More Solutions and HIS have committed to taking advertising boards. A number of other firms have agreed in principle and we look forward to getting all the boards manufactured and displayed as early as possible in the season.

4] Sponsorship We are also delighted to have received the following sponsorship:
First team sponsor ROK 2nd team strip Russwood Primary School strip Tony Robinson Fixture leaflets BLASTA Beverages Graham Fraser

The following opportunities are still available: Williamson 6s £150
Daffodil planting [smithy end] £100 Website £200
Paint for concrete posts £50 Match balls £15
Raffle prize £10 [or donation in kind]

5] Pitch Maintenance Following the AGM we have had further advice on the pitch maintenance through the good offices of George Fraser. It transpires that the PH of the pitch is too acidic at 5.1 [for those scientists amongst you] and the potassium level is less than half what it should be. We are taking further advice as to the best course of action. In the meantime many thanks to David Cheyne who has twice in the past month spent over 3 hours going very slowly over the pitch and the training area spiking it with the tractor.

6] E-bay We were advised a week ago by someone from Skye that what appeared to be a Newtonmore Camanachd Club medal won by a D MacDonald was for sale under 'golfing memorabilia'. There were two D. MacDonalds in the Camanachd final that year in which we were beaten 3-0 by Furnace (who actually went through the whole competition without conceding a goal) and there was one D. MacDonald in the winning Sutherland cup winning side. We think it may be the Sutherland one. We are bidding for it.

7] Cairngorms Gazeteer As this newsletter is being compiled we discovered that the shinty was not going to be included in a Gazeteer of the top 50 tourist attractions in the National Park. Many thanks to an anonymous supporter who alerted us to this and allowed us to intervene just before the Gazeteer was being sent to the printers. The worst bit about it was Kingussie were included!

8] Diary date Don't forget that the Newtonmore 10k race is at midday on March 21st the same day as the Kingussie game at the Eilan at 2.30pm. The shinty club and Village Hall Committee are jointly organising the Ceilidh and bar in the hall from 8pm. It is 18 and over. An excellent band is lined up 'Hell for Leather' so do come along and support it. We hope that this may become an annual event.

9] Thanks To Rocky for continuing to donate a % of the sales of 'Natural Mechanical' to the club and to Graeme Campbell for a generous donation to the club.

10] Matches The Open Day friendly will be the first outing for the 1st team. The 2nds had a comfortable 10-0 victory over Inverness, but the under 17s lost 2-1 to a strong Lochaber team in the W J Cameron semi final despite a frantic last ten minutes of pressure.
