Newtonmore Camanachd Club

Newsletter March 2009

1] On the Field The 1sts have played very well in both their 5-0 victory over Glenurquhart and the 1-1 draw with Kingussie. We totally dominated the Kingussie team and it's a shame we didn't get more reward for it. Our young 2nd team were unlucky to lose 2-1 to Kingussie and 3-1 to Glengarry as two draws would have been a better reflection of the games. A number of people have said that they did not know when Primary and other youth games were on so we will try and see if we can advertise these better.

2] Gergask robbed? Gergask performed really well in the shinty 6s tournament in Fort William winning 3 and drawing 1 of their 6 games. A controversial decision by the referee that judged that our keeper had touched a ball which would not have counted as a goal was the crucial difference and a great disappointment as for such a small school to reach the semi-final would have been fantastic. Many congratulations to all the team and to Peter the coach for bringing them on so well.

3] Newtonmore Primary 5s just fall short Having won the national competition last year Newtonmore just fell short and finished third this year. They lost narrowly to Tomnacross in the semi-final [who went on to win the tournament], despite having already beaten them in the league phase.

4] Advertising boards Many thanks to MGM Timber of Inverness, the Press and Journal of Aberdeen, Chris Robinson and Aviemore Boys Club for being the latest to agree to take a board. It's really great to get businesses from outside the local area involved and I hope that all the businesses that support us will get additional contacts and business from Newtonmore people seeing the signs at the matches.

5] Sponsorship Further to the sponsors that were announced last month we are delighted that BLASTA are going to be supporting the Williamson 6's again through the provision of venison for sausages and burgers.

The following opportunities are still available:
Daffodil planting [Smithy end] £75 Website £200
Paint for concrete posts £50 Match balls £15
[Only 18th July 2nds v Glengarry still available + any new home Cup fixtures for both the 1sts and 2nds]

Raffle prize: £10 or donation in kind [16th May 1sts v Fort William, 18th July 1sts v Glenorchy, 5th Sept 1sts v Bute, 12th Sept 1sts v Inverary and any additional home cup fixtures still available].

6] Volunteers Thanks to Gillian Campbell for volunteering to do the refreshments for 1st team matches and Alison Jones for 2nd team matches. It would be great to have some more people as regular helpers as you do tend to miss a lot of the game if you are doing it yourself! We discovered at the Kingussie game that when it is busy we need 2 people on parking as well as 4 on the gate, though we might not have got as many cars in if we had tried to organise it!

7] E-bay We were unsuccessful in our bid for the medal mentioned in the last newsletter.

8] B & S youth shinty initiative One of the grant conditions for this initiative is that we market shinty to tourists which we are already doing for our senior games. Over Easter we are going to be having a couple of shinty try out sessions for tourists conducted by Paul Mellis at the Highland Folk museum on a trial basis. If it is a success then these try out sessions will be a regular feature on Mondays from the end of June to the end of August.

9] Road race dance Thanks to the Village Hall committee, particularly Shairon, for sourcing such an excellent band as Hell for Leather and the rest of the organization. Thanks also to those that helped behind the bar and helped clear up. Both organizations made a profit out of the event and the 10 mile run was such a success it looks like the Business Association will make this a regular feature on the social calendar.

10] Fundraising We had hoped to have Hell for Leather back for an event on the Saturday of the Highland Games, but unfortunately another organization had already booked the hall. We hope that the players will do some sort of fundraising that weekend possibly connected with the hill race.

Eddie Harrigan is organizing Newtonmore's Strongest man for Saturday 20th June so mark that in your diary.

11] Marketing Matches Rob tells me that about 30 visitors turned up on Sat 28th for the postponed match so we are getting results from all the different types of advertising we are doing, although it is difficult to get the message out about postponements. The latest initiative to draw in people that would not normally attend our matches is to trial the distribution of ''25% off admission price vouchers'' through selected outlets from Aviemore to Grantown later in the year. We are also looking at a marketing information leaflet, similar to the orange one produced in 2007, provided that we can get it paid for through our grants.

12] Website www.newtonmoreshinty.com has seen some recent improvements, the latest being the Camanachd Cup winning sides, scores, captains and pictures of many of the teams. Peter is also putting the results on and a link each Wednesday to the Strathy report. [There are now directions to the ground and we've found that both the Inverness and Perth buses and trains stop in Newtonmore at convenient times for 1430 throw ups!]

We are still trying to update player's pictures and profiles + standardize the information to minimize the need for updating. These amendments are work in progress so if anyone has any ideas for other improvements on the website we'd be glad to hear from you.

13] Selection Congratulations to Rory Kennedy who has been selected to play for the under 17 development squad who are going to Ireland later in the year.
