Newtonmore Camanachd Club
Newsletter April 2009
1] On the Field Three draws for the 1sts against Kingussie,
Kyles and Oban is probably some kind of record, but it looks as
this is going to be a very close title race in the premier league.
The venue for the MacTavish semi against Fort William will be
decided shortly. [The committee and coaching staff were concerned
at the impact and potential consequences of the behaviour of a
small number of players at the end of the Kyles game and the team
manager has spoken to these individuals.]
The 2nds have had some good performances, but the results have
been slow to come. Hopefully the league victory against Lovat
will be the catalyst for a sustained climb up the league.
The result of the season so far was the excellent team performance
by the under 14s in defeating Kingussie 5-2.
2] Advertising Board thanks We have 8 new advertising
boards on display already this year which has brought some much
needed income to the club. Many thanks are due to James Brannan
who has managed to get 6 of them [including MGM, Howdens, HIS
and Aviemore Boys Club] by being prepared to ask! Do you know
a business you could ask?
3] Painting opportunity! The white fence posts round the
Eilan were not redone last year and are in need of attention.
The grass has been killed round the bases and wire brushing of
the first stretch has been completed. There are 166 fence posts
and 24 of them have been painted so that's 142 to go! I'm looking
for 7 volunteers to join me in doing about 18 posts each which
would be a time commitment of about 2 hours. Please let me know
if you are able to help. Paint and brushes supplied and it can
be a time suitable to you.
4] Dinner dance It may seem a bit early to be mentioning
this, but you may want to put the date of Saturday 5th December
in your diary…you never know we may have something to celebrate!
This year the dance is at the Highland hotel and it's a party
night theme with Kenny Nairn and Ian Grover booked to provide
the entertainment. Tickets will be £20 for club members
and £22 for non-members.
5] Karen's cakes and other fundraising There are various
fundraising events being organised by Glen Tonkin and David Campbell
to raise money for Marie Curie which I hope you will support especially
over the weekend of 9th/10th May, with a walk, race night and
golf match. You can watch their unique promotional video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lvgV6QO772s
The annual Marie Curie collection is at the Fort William game
on 16th May.
Karen Massey is going to be baking blue and white cakes for home
matches. They will be sold at 50p each with half the money going
to the club and half to the Leukaemia Research Fund.
The next definite date for an event is Saturday 20th June when
Newtonmore's strongest man is taking place at the tennis courts.
We hope to have players doing a fundraiser using the Creag Dhu
hill race and then at the end of August have another event similar
to last years marathon
6] Scoreboard Following on from the AGM we are purchasing
a scoreboard. David Cheyne has kindly agreed to sponsor its purchase
and since it was Anne Connolly's idea we hope she will offer to
change the score when she is there!
7] Youth Shinty Initiative Shinty has now been part of
the curriculum for at least two year groups in every school. After
school clubs have now started at Alvie and at Aviemore so Grantown
Grammar is the only school where pupils do not now have access
to an after school club.
8] Williamson 6s Another date for the diary earlier in
the year is Wednesday 24th June. This year we re expecting a record
entry of about 24 teams [up from last years record of 17 due to
the Shinty Coaching Initiative] and will be running at least 3
pitches. We need 6 volunteers to referee the games and some volunteers
to help the PTA with the tea and cakes. The BBQ has been sponsored
by BLASTA and Eddy Harrigan has kindly offered to be the chief
chef.
9] Match sponsorship Many thanks for the response to the
last newsletter. The following are still available:
Match balls [£15]: 3rd June 2nds v Skye & 18th July
2nds v Glengarry
Raffle [in kind or £10]: 16th May 1sts v Fort William; 18th
July 1sts v Glenorchy;
5th Sept 1sts v Bute; 12th Sept 1sts v Inverary
10] Shinty at the museum Following a successful trial
at Easter conducted by Paul Mellis there will be shinty try out
sessions for tourists at the museum each Monday in July and August.
They will run from about 1230 to 3pm with 4 separate sessions
of half an hour. The museum staff do the booking and there is
a small donation to the club. Is anyone interested and available
to help take any of these sessions?
11] 10 mile race It was a great organisational and financial
success so 20th March 2010 has been set for next years race starting
at 11am partly so that it does not overlap with the shinty. The
dance made a profit of several hundred pounds shared between the
Shinty Club and the Village Hall.
