Newtonmore Camanachd Club
Newsletter July 2009
1] On the Field The last two Saturdays saw the 1sts and
2nds score 23 goals between them and both Danny McCrae and David
Wilde score consecutive hat-tricks. I wonder when that last happened?!
Hopefully the momentum can be maintained for the 1sts in the next
home game on 8th August against Lochaber.
2] Improvement of the pitch Everyone is remarking about
the vast improvement to the surface of the pitch. The next issue
that we want to address is the repair of the goalmouths and we
are taking advice on the best way to do the work.
3] Clubhouse improvements Walking along the front of the
clubhouse during games to get access to the clubhouse is a hazard,
particularly for youngsters. The committee has agreed that we
will remove a section of the railing at the home changing room
end and put in a step and handrail. We will also see if we can
get a removable chain or similar to close off the front entrance
to the clubhouse during games. We are also looking at creating
a proper path to the rear of the pavilion which would allow an
alternative route.
We are also looking at the provision of internal cupboard space
for merchandise on the wall where the Boards are. The shortage
of adequate storage is inhibiting us rationalising the stock and
making it more available for sale.
4] Williamson 6s As part of the debrief on the event we
are now consulting with the coaches and the schools about the
possibility of moving the Williamson to a Sunday next year as
with 24+ teams the scheduling of the event on an evening is a
challenge.
5] Fence post painting I have still not been knocked down
in the stampede of volunteers! With Rob Ritchie's help about 140
of the 166 posts have been completed. The wire brush, paint and
brushes are in the shed and you can get access to them at a time
of your choosing by speaking to myself or Rob.
6] Shinty try outs at the Highland Folk Park These are
now underway on a Monday from 1230 to 3pm. Vouchers are given
out to those who take part giving 25% off admission to a 1sts
game and some of these have been redeemed.
7] BBC filming 30th June On a baking evening presenter
Ben Fogle was given an overview of the game and learnt some basic
skills from Brick. He then took part in a three a side game, proved
to be a good sport and managed to survive unscathed despite Michael
making him face a penalty! If they do use that part of the filming
you will see him missing some open goals. We will let you know
when the programme is to be broadcast
8] Fundraising A Family Race Night will be organised for
later in the year and it is intended to have an event one Sunday
in September building on the success of last year's marathon.
Tickets for the Annual dinner dance to be held on Saturday 5th
December at the Highlander Hotel will be available from Eddy Harrigan.
Music is the party night combination of Kenny Nairn and Ian Grover.
Tickets will be £20 for members and £22 for non-members.
Please contact Eddy at eddy.harrigan@hotmail.com
9] Cakes! If anyone is willing to bake cakes to sell at
games [as an alternative to sausage rolls] that would be great.
If anyone wants to sell them to raise money for another community
group or a charity we are happy to sell during games with 50%
going to the club and 50% to the other organisation. Karen's corporate
coloured ginger men went sold out last Saturday!
10] Gas leak One or two people had remarked on a smell
of gas coming from the vicinity of the Calor gas storage tank.
You may be interested to know after reporting it as an emergency
four small leaks were discovered by the engineer. It is possible
that some of the leaks may have been caused by objects striking
the pipes so we are going to look at putting fencing right round
it to stop the possibility of the immediate area being used by
children for playing as this may have been one of the causes.
