Newtonmore Camanachd Club
June 2010
1] Shinty strictly come dancing The lead item is usually the game itself, but this event was such an outstanding success it merits top billing. Many thanks to Eddy Harrigan for all the work he did in organising it and for the participating players and their partners for the hard practice that led to such a surprisingly high level of performance! The comperes and judges added great humour to the evening and everyone commented on the fantastic atmosphere that was generated. Judith Houghton and Scott Campbell were the audience pick as the winners, but it was a close run thing.
We’re not sure yet how much was raised for club funds, but the magnificent £560 raised in the auction for the signed Mactavish cup winners shirt from last year was an added bonus. Thanks to everyone who helped on the evening in any capacity. I gather that bits of it are already available to see on the internet.
2] On the Field Another disappointing cup defeat to Kingussie for the 1sts, but several other victories keep us at the top of the league albeit that Fort William have a game in hand. Our defensive record is once again outstanding. No such problems for the 2nd team against Kingussie as they won against them again fairly comfortably and had excellent performances against Fort William, Kinlochshiel and Glenurquhart.
3] Upcoming fixtures Our Primary School team are playing in the shinty world cup final at the Marine Harvest event on 3rd July against Beauly. We also have a senior 6’s team taking part that day.
4] Shinty Marketing Leaflets Thanks to Anne the Osteopath for getting leaflets into Grantown and Nethy Bridge. They are definitely being read as we have had Irish, French, Canadian, Belgian and American visitors at the last couple of games.
5] Williamson 6s event Another fantastic evening with 18 teams taking part. No cups for Newtonmore this year with Kingussie winning the Williamson trophy and the Massey cup for girls, Strathdearn winning the Gergask trophy for developing/younger players, and Alvie triumphing in the Balavil trophy for tots. Eddy did a power of work at the BBQ with over £250 raised for club funds. Many thanks to Jim and Helen Coyle for the use of the BBQ, BLASTA for the burgers and MacLean’s Bakery for the rolls.
6] Sponsorship It’s not what you know it’s who you know. The MacLean’s Bakery link was made by Iain Macdonald who is a relative of the owner. Are you related to or do you know someone who has a business who might be interested in supporting us either in cash or in kind? If so please ask them if they can help.
7] Shinty cat We are waiting on a large boulder for it to be fixed to at the Eilan. Janet Davidson was very keen for it not to be hidden in the clubhouse so it is temporarily residing in my garden and has already been photographed by a number of tourists.
