Newtonmore Camanachd Club
November 2010
1] Dinner Dance A really excellent night was had by all. The organisation and catering by the Glen Hotel was very good [we even had ‘League Champions’ printed on the balloons] and the excellent band, the Approvals, kept the floor full throughout the evening. The cameo appearance by David Holt was also very much appreciated.
Many thanks to Eddy Harrigan for all his work in organising the dance. The ticket price just covered the meal, hall hire and the band, with a little left over, so it was a bonus to the club to make about £300 profit from the raffle….many thanks to the individuals and businesses who donated prizes and of course everyone who bought tickets.
2] Player awards These were made at the dinner dance and youth was to the fore. Many congratulations to all three on this richly deserved recognition.
Player of the season Rory Kennedy
2nd team player Blair Mackintosh
Young player Martin Ivil
3] Special General Meeting The following were appointed to coaching/managerial positions at the meeting on Friday 26th November:
1st team: Norman Macarthur assisted by Willie Menzies
2nd team: Cammy Macdonald assisted by Glen Tonkin
Under 17s: Fraser Mackintosh assisted by Scott Campbell and Glen Tonkin
Under 14s: Michael Ritchie assisted by Paul Macarthur and David Campbell
Primary school 6/7: Tony Robinson and Travis Tonkin
‘’ 3-5: Graeme Irvine and Charlie Speedie [till outdoor sessions start]
‘’ 1-3: Michael Ritchie, Evan Cheyne and Colin Stewart
Travis Tonkin has taken on the role of coordinating the youth coaching and we hope that everyone involved will take coaching training courses [9 people have been on courses in recent weeks]. We hope to use the website to have lesson plans available and to coordinate attendance at sessions including having adult supervision for lunch time sessions at the school.
The meeting also heard that the committee had decided that the admission price at the gate will rise to £5 for next season. [Kingussie have already agreed to put their price up to £5]. The price of members season tickets will remain at the same price for the sixth year in a row as will concessions. Season ticket holder’s admission to home cup ties remains at £2 as well.
4] Annual General Meeting This will take place on Friday 28th January 2011 at 8pm in the clubhouse. The only motions requiring approval of the AGM planned at the moment are a] to raise the Annual membership from £5 to £6 [this will raise the season ticket price for non members by £1] b] to raise Life membership to £50 [as it has been at £25 for as long as anyone can remember]. We now expect a rush of Life membership applications before the AGM!!!
5] Shinty sale This is on Saturday 4th December. We will be looking for volunteers to help with the soup and pudding lunch [which is being supported by the village hall committee] as well as for donations of soups, puddings & home baking so that the stall is really busy this year. We hope to have excellent photo prints of the champions available for purchase and the opportunity for photos with the cup! There will be merchandise for sale [but not including waterproof jackets which we have been unable to source at an affordable price]. The venison stall should be sold out quickly again and there will be the usual bric a brac, books and plants for sale as well as Camanachd jewellery.
6] Other sponsorship opportunities We would encourage everyone to use any contacts they might have with local [and national] businesses to encourage uptake of advertising boards at £350 for 3 years or payment by instalments over 3 years. This is an important source of income for us.
We also have a number of other sponsorship opportunities: the Easter eggs for the primary school at £150 and the BBQ at the Williamson at £200 are a couple of examples.
The committee are very grateful to the trustees of the Isobel Parker Fund for agreeing to meet most of the costs of the new behind goal nets which have been delivered.
We would like to install a PA system linked to speakers at the corners of the clubhouse [£375], but it will need to wait till we get a donation or earn additional income to cover the costs.
7] COOP sponsor Mactavish The Association have announced that the COOP are sponsoring the Mactavish Cup in 2011 and 2012. The COOP has also provided a grant to the club this year which we are very grateful for.
8] Website We are keen to hear ideas about changes we could make to www.newtonmoreshinty.com to make it [even] more interesting. We have just discovered that we can analyse traffic to the site and that the counter on the front page does not give a true picture of how many hits we are getting. Although fairly modest by some standards we did get over 75000 visits last year which is not bad going.
9] Next newsletter This will probably be at the end of January after the AGM.
