Newtonmore Camanachd Club

October 2010

1] Scottish Hydro Premier Division Champions It is part of club history now, but many congratulations again to all the 1st team players and coaches for their win against Fort William and the capture of a national title for the first time in 25 years. It was well deserved and you could see by the reaction of so many people how much it meant. It feels like a psychological barrier has been overcome. All the supporters, as well as the players, hope that it can be the springboard to a period of sustained success.

With so many good performances for the 2nds, especially in the latter part of the season, it looks like competition for places next year is going to be intense!

2] Annual dance This event on 20th November is a sell out. I am looking for a few prizes for the raffle so that we can make a little money on the evening. Can you help?

3 Special General Meeting This will take place on Friday 26th November at 7.30pm in the clubhouse. The reason for the meeting is that the AGM is a bit late for getting all the managers and coaches for the senior, youth and primary teams agreed. A reminder will go out nearer the time.

4] Annual General Meeting This will take place on Friday 28th January 2011 at 8pm in the clubhouse. Bob Kilsby will be stepping down as Treasurer so the committee would be very grateful for anyone interested in volunteering for this crucial position. Many thanks to Bob for all the hard work he has put in over the last three years.

5] Joe Toal match The annual Joe Toal 6’s had to be cancelled this year. Newtonmore have instead been asked to play in a commemorative match against Lochaber which has been fixed for Saturday 6th November throw up 1pm at Spean Bridge.

6] Shinty sale This is on Saturday 4th December. We will be looking for volunteers to help with the soup and pudding lunch [which is being supported by the village hall committee] as well as for donations of soups, puddings & home baking. We hope to have excellent photo prints of the champions available for purchase and the opportunity for photos with the cup! There will be merchandise for sale [but not including waterproof jackets which we have been unable to source at an affordable price]. The venison stall should be sold out quickly again and there will be the usual bric a brac, books and plants for sale as well as Camanachd jewellery.

7] Xmas market The club would like to help the village hall with their Xmas market on Saturday 13th Nov. Donations of baking, soup & sandwiches for the lunches are needed + helpers for serving and dishes. Please contact Shairon Macarthur if you can help.

8] Thanks to

  • all the businesses and individuals who contributed £25 to sponsor a player. The full list of sponsors is on the website. This is going to allow us to purchase more kit.
  • Roy Alexander for kindly donating £120 to cover the cost of new goal nets.
  • Badenoch and Strathspey Sports Club for donating £500.
  • Highland Council Area Discretionary Fund kindly for awarding us £1000 towards the cost of the pitch spiking, sanding and fertilising.

9] Other sponsorship opportunities We would encourage everyone to use any contacts they might have with local [and national] businesses to encourage uptake of advertising boards at £350 for 3 years or payment by instalments over 3 years. This is an important source of income for us.

We also have a number of other sponsorship opportunities: the Easter eggs for the primary school at £150 and the BBQ at the Williamson at £200 are a couple of examples.

The committee also wants to replace the behind goal nets [£385] and buy a PA system linked to speakers at the corners of the clubhouse [£375], but it will need to wait till we get a donation or earn additional income to cover the costs.

10] Golf The shinty club beat the golf club 81/2 – 31/2 on Saturday 23rd October!  We hope to reinstate this as an annual event, but we expect the handicap system to be changed for next year as it seemed to favour the shinty club!
