newtonmore 1st team premier league and Camanachd Champions 2011

Newtonmore Camanachd Club Newsletter
April 2011

1] Results It has been a month of ups and downs for both our senior teams. The 1sts dropped five points in four games against Glenurquhart, Kingussie, Kyles and Oban, but are in the semi final of the Mactavish against Fort William having had another comfortable win against Beauly.

The 2nds were disappointed to lose narrowly to Glenurquhart in the Sutherland, but have had some outstanding performances in the league particularly against Kinlochshiel and are top scorers and second top of the league. It is good to see some very young players contributing so well.

A young under 17 side won convincingly 6 – 1 against Caberfeidh. The under 14s were heavily beaten by Kingussie 0 – 7, but will improve with more experience and confidence.

There is an under 14s match at the Eilan against Aberlour at 1800 on Thursday 5th May so why not go there after you’ve voted!

2] Sponsorship There is one raffle sponsorship left for the 1sts against Lovat on 25th June at £15 or a donation in kind.

There are three 2nd team match ball sponsorships at £20 available for Glengarry on 4th June, Kilmallie on 2nd July and Kinlochshiel on 23rd July.

3] Action photos for website We’d be very grateful to get some new photos of first and second team action in 2010 and 2011 to add to the website. Please
e-mail suitable shots direct to Peter at  prh108@o2.co.uk .

4] Refreshment thanks Many thanks to the Post Office in the shape of Graeme Irvine for their sponsorship, to James Brannan for donating the sausage rolls and to the volunteers who have brought home baking and missed half the goals because they are serving customers! The three 1sts games in April brought a profit of nearly £400 which is a fantastic result considering the prices [cheaper than any other ground we have been to this year!].

5] Shinty Heritage project The selection panel considered 17 applications for the researcher position and selected Rosemary Gibson. Work on the project will start in early June. If you would like further information see the Q & A on the website.

6] Camanachd Association AGM This was held in Fort William on Friday 29th April. The main issue of contention was the ‘pilot’ of rolling substitutes brought in by the board this season. It turns out that as this is a rule change under byelaw 1 they had no authority to take the decision!
There were apologies from the board about the poor consultation and communication. The eventual upshot was that it was felt to be impractical to stop the pilot mid season. However for rolling substitutes to be in place next season there will need to be an early AGM or a Special General Meeting to approve it.

7] Trees Many thanks to Stuart and Isobel Geddes and Kate and Jim Langley in Laggan for donating some of their surplus trees to replace the ones that did not survive the winter [or more accurately the rabbits].

8] Fence post painting It’s two years since they were last done and they are in need of a freshen up. Could anyone who is willing to paint say 8 posts [that would take about an hour] please contact me on 673048. Paint and brush supplied….. 6 have been done so only 160 to go!

9] Surplus camans + helmets We have not had any response! Have you got old camans lying around unused that could be donated to the club? Perhaps they could be cut down and used by some of the younger players. With new camans costing over £35 it doesn’t make sense to have unused ones lying around. New helmets now cost £50+ so if you have any helmets that are no longer being used a donation of these to the club would be much appreciated.
