Camanachd Club
Newsletter 3 - 2008
1] On the Field Although the weather has
caused the cancellation of a number of games it is pleasing that the
1sts have won their first three games and the 2nds had a great victory
in their only game so far. Training which has been mainly indoors since
January moves outdoors now that the clocks have changed. As a result of
the 8-0 victory over Inverness in the MacTavish we now play Kingussie
away on 26th April. Will we still have no bookings after that
game?!
2] Life membership The club records are
incomplete so a list of life members we know about is now displayed on
the notice board in the clubhouse. If your name is missing and you are
sure you have paid please contact me. Life membership is available at
£25 and forms can be downloaded from the website.
3] Primary School Finals Two teams from
Newtonmore and Laggan are through to the finals on Sunday 20th
April in Perth. A bus has been organised and there will only be a modest
charge as Michael Ritchie raised sponsorship by running the Inverness
half marathon. If you are interested in joining the travelling
support please contact Graeme at the Post Office re availability and
departure time.
4] Trees wanted We have lost a number of the
trees planted to screen the new shed, and to fill in gaps on the
boundary at the village side of the pitch, to a mixture of sustained
gale force winds and rabbits. We need about 20 replacement trees and
would particularly welcome any spare Scots pine or rowan you might have.
However birch, alder, wild cherry or any other native trees would also
be gratefully received.
5] Sponsorship We are still looking for a
main sponsor for the Family Sunday event at the beginning of August. If
you know of any business which might be interested the cost is £300. All
the match ball sponsorships are now taken, but there are six raffle
sponsorships available for 1st team matches at £10 or a gift
in kind.
6] Coaching Project The first stage in this
is now going to be after school clubs at Kingussie High School from week
beginning 14th April till the end of term for both junior and
senior pupils. Laurie Skudos will be the principle coach for this. We
are arranging coaching for PE staff and other interested teachers so
that they will be able to take shinty sessions during school time. Many
thanks to Badenoch and Strathspey Sports Council for doubling their
grant to £1000 and to Kingussie High School for helping with the
purchase of helmets.
6] Website We are really grateful to Jim
Watt for volunteering to maintain the website. We are currently looking
at the accuracy of the Club Honours section as well as how to explain it
to those who are newcomers to shinty; we also intend to get the player
profiles expanded, incorporate a list of all the club captains and
include a number of links to sponsors and other shinty websites. If you
have any ideas for information that it would be useful to have up on the
website then please let me know. We hope to have all information up to
date, but unlike some other sites do not intend having interactive items
as that increases the time spent administering the site
disproportionately to the benefit it brings.
7] Deal or no deal A joint fundraising event
with the Hall committee is being arranged for the end of April. Details
will be circulated once they are confirmed.
8] Possible land purchase No definite news
on this yet. The landowner has asked us to provide a map with the area
we are interested in identified clearly. After that we will know if
they are interested in selling and what price they feel the land is
worth. This will allow the committee to agree whether it is worth
pursuing and, if so, an Emergency General meeting would be called.
9] Progress at the Eilan You will have
seen, if you have been passing, that the shed is now taking shape; the
concrete holes for the behind goal nets are also now in place so these
should be erected shortly; the seeding of the new training are will take
place at the end of April/early May and a new signpost for the club will
be ordered in the next couple of weeks.
